About Gifford
As a young man stationed in Oklahoma in 1970, Gifford Ewing began photographing black and white landscapes. The New England native was struck by the vastness of the prairies.
In 1972, he moved west to Denver and opened Gifford Ewing Photography, serving the advertising and architectural communities. At the same time he was earning a reputation as one of the region’s finest photographers for his black and white photography of the country’s varied landscapes.
Gifford has concentrated on Maine and the Rocky Mountain region. These two distinctive environments offer him the artistic forms for his inspiration: the rich texture of the land along with the tones and interplay of light in pristine environments.
From his black and white negatives, Gifford creates fine art archival silver prints. "I enjoy the more traditional photographic methods in my work. They serve the purity and natural beauty of the landscape. I capture the majority of my images in black and white with a 5X7 Deardorff wooden field camera using the zone system for exposure. I develop and print all images using archival silver gelatin paper finishing them in selenium to bring out the richness and to add to the archival qualities."
In his work with the Colorado Nature Conservancy, Gifford travels the state and shoots the organization’s projects. "Not only does the Nature Conservancy project allow me to photograph remote, beautiful locations, but the work takes on additional meaning because I believe in their goals of preservation."
Gifford’s photographs grace collections from Maine to California, including the Denver Art Museum. His photographs can be viewed by appointment at the Ewing Studio in Denver. Call 303.898.6262 or email gallery@ewingphoto.com for more information.
